Leonardo never went to university and was embarrassed by his Latin. In Milan, at the court of Ludovico Sforza, he set out to fix that — in the same notebook where he drew siege engines and the faces of the people he passed in the street.

Leonardo arrives at the court of Ludovico il Moro, offering himself first as a military engineer and only last as a painter. The Codex Trivulzianus begins a few years later.
