XXL LIMITED & NUMBERED FACSIMILE EDITION — 111 COPIES ONLY
The Renaissance Analog Computer of the Heavens — Reborn in Monumental XXL Format
We are proud to present the XXL Luxury Edition of Astronomicum Caesareum, one of the most magnificent scientific books of the Renaissance.
Produced in a strictly limited edition of only 111 numbered copies worldwide, this extraordinary publication faithfully recreates the imperial splendor of the 1540 original while offering an unparalleled collector’s presentation.
It was the year 1540 when Petrus Apianus, a German humanist noted for his impressive work in mathematics, cartography and astronomy, published and dedicated this masterful work to Emperor Charles I of Spain and V of Germany. His interest in these sciences prompted the sovereign to finance the mysterious manual and then become its patron and grant him titles in order to protect the opinions of an intellectual dangerously advanced for his time.
The Astronomicum Caesarum is considered one of the masterpieces of 16th century printing. Its lavish illustrations designed on movable discs of hand-colored cardboard and stitched with thread expose nothing less than the evolution of the universe and the laws that govern it.
In it, Apianus offers instructions for the use of the movable discs or volvelles, with which he perfectly imitated the use of the astrolabe and which he used, for example, to calculate the exact date of birth of Charles I and his brother Ferdinand.
The work is recognized as one of the best astronomical treatises of the 16th century because of the simplicity with which it tries to explain these sciences to the reader, accompanied by luxurious illustrations and diagrams. In addition, he was able to identify the routes of some comets, forecast eclipses and predict the horoscope of royalty. Something so unusual and surprising at the time of the Renaissance that has led him to survive and be appreciated to this day.
Art and science merge in this book of which 111 copies are preserved around the world. Only 25 of them are in perfect condition or with most of the movable discs or volvelles preserved. In 2020, in an auction in the United States, 260,000 dollars were paid for one of these copies.
This compendium of ideas on astronomy is presented in a simple form with the sole intention of facilitating the reader’s understanding, but without leaving aside elegance and exquisiteness in form.
Thirty-five paper engravings with movable discs make up the printing of a manual that has made history for its content and the visual richness that is evident in each of its pages.
Apianus, with his knowledge and the publication of this work, is undoubtedly part of a scientific revolution that at the time was challenging to God and the Church and that over the centuries has become key to understanding the world and breaking with the thinking based on divine laws.
A book is a treasure. And the Astronomicum Caesarum is a good example of this saying, both for its valuable content and for the exquisiteness of its forms.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Astronomicum Caesareum?
The Astronomicum Caesareum, created by Petrus Apianus and published in 1540, is one of the most extraordinary scientific books of the Renaissance. It is famous for its elaborate volvelles — rotating paper instruments that allowed readers to calculate astronomical positions and celestial events.
This remarkable work combined science, art, and engineering, making it one of the most sophisticated astronomical books ever printed.
What are the volvelles in the Astronomicum Caesareum?
Volvelles are rotating paper discs mounted on the pages of the book. By turning these discs, readers could perform astronomical calculations such as predicting planetary movements, determining celestial alignments, and studying the structure of the heavens.
These intricate mechanisms transform the book into a functional scientific instrument rather than a simple printed volume.
Did the Astronomicum Caesareum work like an analog computer?
Yes. The Astronomicum Caesareum functioned much like an early analog computer. By rotating its complex system of volvelles, scholars and astronomers could calculate planetary positions, eclipses, and other astronomical phenomena without mathematical tables.
For Renaissance scientists, the book served as a practical computational tool centuries before modern computing devices existed.
What makes this XXL edition special?
This XXL facsimile edition reproduces the Astronomicum Caesareum at the original monumental folio size, faithfully preserving the scale, color, and intricate mechanical structure of the volvelles.
Each copy is part of a strictly limited and numbered edition of 111 copies, produced for collectors, historians, and institutions interested in Renaissance science and rare books.
Why is the Astronomicum Caesareum considered a masterpiece?
The Astronomicum Caesareum is considered a masterpiece because it unites scientific knowledge, mechanical ingenuity, and Renaissance artistic beauty.
Its richly colored illustrations, elaborate volvelles, and sophisticated astronomical models represent the peak of scientific publishing in the 16th century. Today it is regarded as one of the most important works in the history of astronomy and early scientific instruments.
Why Collectors Value the Astronomicum Caesareum
For collectors of rare books and Renaissance scientific works, the Astronomicum Caesareum occupies a unique place in the history of knowledge.
Published in 1540 by the mathematician and astronomer Petrus Apianus, the book represents one of the most ambitious scientific publications of the Renaissance. Its extraordinary system of rotating volvelles allowed readers to calculate planetary movements and celestial phenomena directly from the pages of the book, transforming it into a remarkable astronomical instrument.
Because of its complexity, beauty, and scientific importance, the original editions of the Astronomicum Caesareum are considered among the most valuable printed books of the 16th century and are preserved today in major libraries and museums around the world.
This XXL facsimile edition recreates the monumental scale and intricate mechanical structure of the original work, allowing collectors and scholars to experience the book as it was intended in the Renaissance: not only as a text, but as a working scientific device.
For historians of science, rare book collectors, and lovers of Renaissance culture, the Astronomicum Caesareum remains one of the most fascinating achievements of early scientific publishing.
