THE STORY · c. 800 — 2026
Created around the year 800, the Book of Kells survived Viking raids, theft, centuries at Kells and the upheavals of Irish history. Today it is preserved at Trinity College Dublin as one of the great masterpieces of medieval art.
“You might say that all this was the work of an angel, and not of a man. GERALD OF WALES · 12TH CENTURY

The Book of Kells is written on vellum and lavishly illuminated. Its precise place of creation remains uncertain, although Iona has traditionally been considered a principal possibility.

A Viking raid on Iona leaves 68 members of the monastic community dead. The survivors later establish themselves at Kells. Our edition is limited to 68 copies in remembrance of this historic episode.

The manuscript is stolen for its precious ornamental shrine, or cumdach. The book itself is recovered and remains at Kells throughout the Middle Ages.

Henry Jones, Bishop of Meath, presents the Book of Kells to Trinity College Dublin, where it has remained ever since.
