Leonardo meant to publish a great illustrated treatise on the human body. He dissected, he drew, he wrote — and he died with the book unfinished. It took four centuries for the pages to be put between covers.

The anatomical sheets pass to Francesco Melzi with the rest of Leonardo's manuscripts and stay unpublished — seen by almost no one for a century.
Through Pompeo Leoni's collection the drawings reach England and, by the end of the seventeenth century, the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle — where they remain.
Theodor Sabachnikoff and Giovanni Piumati publish Dell'Anatomia, Fogli A: the Windsor sheets in facsimile with transcriptions — the first time the world sees Manuscript A entire.
