Leonardo and the Human Body
Among Leonardo da Vinci's most extraordinary achievements are his anatomical studies: an exceptional body of drawings in which art, science and observation come together with astonishing precision.
During the winter of 1510–1511, Leonardo devoted himself intensively to the study of human anatomy, examining the structure of bones, muscles and movement with the same analytical mind he applied to engineering and mechanics.
The group of drawings traditionally known as Anatomical Manuscript A represents one of the most remarkable chapters of this research.
Leonardo never published his anatomical investigations during his lifetime. His drawings and notes remained largely unknown for centuries and are today preserved in the Royal Collection at Windsor.
The Historic 1898 Edition

This rare nineteenth-century work presented Leonardo's anatomical manuscript through facsimile reproductions together with transcriptions and scholarly material, preserving an extraordinary record of one of the master's most ambitious scientific investigations.
The Galobart edition reproduces this historic publication in its entirety, preserving its original Italian text, typography, page composition, illustrations and facsimile plates.
The Galobart Limited Edition
Conceived as the first volume in The Galobart Leonardo Anatomical Manuscripts series, Folio A restores the complete historic edition of 1898 for a new generation of collectors.
The facsimile is reproduced at the format of the historic publication, approximately in a 29 cm (11.42 in.) format allowing the anatomical drawings and manuscript pages to retain their original visual presence.
The principal volume is accompanied by a separate English Translation, produced in paperback, allowing international readers to follow the complete textual content while leaving the historic facsimile entirely untouched.
Preserved at Windsor
Leonardo's anatomical drawings form part of the exceptional group of Leonardo works preserved in the Royal Collection at Windsor.
Created more than five centuries ago, these studies reveal Leonardo's attempt to understand the human body not simply as an artist, but as an anatomist, scientist and engineer.
Bones are examined as structural elements. Muscles become mechanisms of movement. The shoulder, hand, spine and leg are investigated layer by layer and from multiple viewpoints.
Many of the visual methods Leonardo developed to explain human anatomy anticipate techniques that would become standard in medical and scientific illustration centuries later.
A Work Leonardo Never Published
Leonardo intended his anatomical investigations to become a major illustrated treatise on the human body.
That book was never completed.
After his death in 1519, his anatomical papers remained unpublished for centuries. The historic editions produced from the Windsor manuscripts at the end of the nineteenth century finally brought this extraordinary work to a wider audience.
The Anatomical Manuscripts — Folio A recovers that historic publication as a collector's facsimile, preserving the character of the original edition while making its contents accessible to today's international reader through a separate English translation.
